Nadat sonsbeek een jaar werd uitgesteld, brak de toen revolutionaire beeldententoonstelling in ’71 door de grenzen van de parken naar buiten. Sonsbeek buiten de perken werd de meest besproken editie ooit omwille van haar sociale engagement. Exact 50 jaar later reiken de ambities minstens even ver: op 2 juli openen we officieel de deuren en parken voor sonsbeek20→24 Force Times Distance - On Labour and its Sonic Ecologies. Ongeveer 40 kunstwerken op 13 verschillende locaties zijn doorlopend tot 30 augustus te zien. Met verschillende tentoonstellingen, een covid-vriendelijk programma en intieme manifestaties markeert deze zomer de start van de 12e en doorlopende editie van sonsbeek, tot → 2024.

Wist je dat De Dokwerker, het bekende monument voor de Februaristaking in Amsterdam, ook te zien was tijdens Sonsbeek ’55? Niet alleen dit beeld is vereeuwigd op een postkaart: al sinds de allereerste sonsbeek tentoonstelling in 1949 werden er ansichtkaarten gedrukt van de kunstwerken. Frans Brink, een verzamelaar uit Westervoort, wist maar liefst 108 exemplaren van de eerste 5 sonsbeektentoonstellingen (1949 - 1966) te bemachtigen en te bewaren. We tonen zijn collectie binnenkort in ons kantoor in Arnhem - als deel van ons archiefproject, maar ook als een trip down memory lane. Binnenkort meer! draag een steentje bij aan sonsbeek20→24
Ben jij straks de trotse eigenaar van een werk van Jennifer Tee? Samen met de in Arnhem geboren kunstenaar brengen we een mooie kunsteditie uit, verbonden aan komende tentoonstelling waar ze een omvangrijk kunstwerk bouwt op de weide onder de beroemde waterval in het Sonsbeek Park. We zien daar straks een patroon van bakstenen in de vorm van een levensboom, allen bedrukt met de nerven van bladeren van verschillende struiken en bomen uit het Arnhemse park. Een aantal van deze bakstenen, lokaal gemaakt en gebakken, bieden we nu aan in een beperkte oplage van 100. Wees er snel bij!

Elke zaterdag van 10.00 uur tot 10:05 speelt de Arnhemse stadsbeiaardier Bob van der Linde een speciale compositie bedacht door kunstenaar Sam Auinger. De Eusebiuskerk doet dienst als megafoon. Of je nu op het terras van Focus Filmtheater staat of in Sonsbeek Park, het geluidswerk sounding arnhem klinkt overal anders. Zo bekleedt de Eusebiuskerk een voortrekkersrol met het oog op de opening van sonsbeek20→24. sounding Arnhem is speciaal ontwikkeld voor deze editie en zal elke week te horen zijn tot eind Augustus.

The School of Narrative Dance van de Italiaanse kunstenaar Marinella Senatore is een wereldwijd bekend project dat draait om dans, samenkomst en collectiviteit. Duizenden mensen in meer dan 17 landen namen reeds deel en nu is het aan ons: deze zomer landt Marinella's inspirerende manifestatie in Arnhem! Aan de hand van beweging en performance gaan we op zoek naar nieuwe vormen van samenzijn in de publieke ruimte. Heb je zin om mee te doen en te ontdekken hoe jouw hobby of talent je lichaam doet bewegen? Begeleid door twee choreografen starten we dit project met een serie gratis workshops.

sonsbeek 20→24 is op zoek naar enthousiaste en geïnteresseerde verhalenvertellers die samen met ons komende editie willen uitbouwen. Als vrijwilliger ben je een onmisbare schakel tussen de kunstwerken, de omgeving, de locaties en onze bezoekers, bovendien draag je bij aan een bijzondere tentoonstelling, stevig verankerd in de stad Arnhem. Remember when sonsbeek 71 was postponed for a year? The exhibition focused on minimal art, land art and social art. For the first time since its start in ‘49 the works literally moved beyond the edges of the parks. Sonsbeek voorbij de perken became the most discussed edition ever and exactly 50 years later, our ambitions are equally profound: on July 2, we will officially open the doors and parks to sonsbeek20→24 Force Times Distance - On Labour and its Sonic Ecologies. Around 40 artworks at 13 different locations are on view until August 30. With various exhibitions, a covid-friendly public program and intimate manifestations, this summer marks the start of the 12th and ongoing edition of sonsbeek, until → 2024.

Did you know that “De Dokwerker”, the famous monument of the February strike in Amsterdam, was also on display during Sonsbeek '55? The image has been immortalized on a postcard and it’s surely not the only one: postcards of the many statues have been printed since the very first sonbeek exhibition in 1949. Frans Brink, a collector from Westervoort, managed to acquire and preserve no fewer than 108 copies of the first 5 sonsbeek exhibitions (1949 - 1966). We will soon be showing his collection in our Arnhem office - as part of our archive project. Join us for a trip down memory lane, more coming soon!

Will you soon be the proud owner of a work by Jennifer Tee? Together with the Arnhem-born artist, we are creating a beautiful art edition linked to the upcoming exhibition. Jennifer is building an extensive art piece on the meadow under the famous waterfall in Sonsbeek Park where a pattern of bricks in the shape of a tree of life is formed, all of them are printed with the veins of leaves from various shrubs and trees from the Arnhem park. We offer some of these bricks, locally made and produced, in a limited edition of 100! Get yours now!

Every Saturday from 10 am to 10:05 am, the Arnhem city carillonneur Bob van der Linde plays a unique composition created by artist Sam Auinger from the top of the Eusebius church. Whether you are standing on the terrace of Focus Filmtheater or lying in Park Sonsbeek, you'll hear a different tonality of the artwork sounding arnhem everywhere you listen. sounding arnhem has been developed for this year’s edition and will be played every week until the end of August.
The School of Narrative Dance is looking for performers

The School of Narrative Dance by the Italian artist Marinella Senatore is a renowned project that circles around dance, gathering and collectivity. Thousands of people in more than 17 countries have participated in this trajectory and now it is our turn: Marinella's inspiring event will land in Arnhem this summer! Revolving around movement and performance, we look for alternative notions of togetherness in the public space. Would you like to participate and discover how your hobby or talent moves your body? Accompanied by two choreographers, we start this project with a series of free workshops.

sonsbeek 20 → 24 is looking for enthousiastic and interested storytellers who want to expand this upcoming edition together with us. As a volunteer you’re the link between the artworks, the environment, the locations and our visitors. Furthermore, you'll contribute to an enormous exhibition, firmly embedded in the city of Arnhem. Now that the new date is highlighted in our agenda, we want to get started with a large group as soon as possible. You certainly don't have to be an art connoisseur, if that is withholding you from applying.
