New MJ Blog Residency - Doreen Mende

This month we welcome a new MJ resident blogger: Doreen Mende. Doreen Mende is a curator who works internationally, and teaches at the Dutch Art Institute. Her practice entails artistic thinking, theoretical reflection and spatial concerns. Over the next two months Doreen Mende will share her blog entitled; 'The Itinerant: When exhibiting turns its back against itself'.

Symposium on curatorial practices from 8-9 November 2013 in Zurich
'Third, fourth and fifth spaces'
Manifesta Journal, in collaboration with OnCurating and ZHdK, is delighted to bring you “Third, fourth and fifth spaces: Curatorial practices in new public and social (digital) spaces”. Hedwig Fijen (Manifesta Director) and Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez (MJ Chief Editor) will open the symposium with an introductory speech; and Virginie Bobin (MJ Associate Editor) and Sepake Angiama (Manifesta Head of Education) will take part in the program.
The symposium will present and discuss current practices of reading, researching, publishing, and curating that have been enabled by the internet and its social technologies; while exploring new formats and advocating the open circulation of knowledge. An emphasis will be placed on contemporary artistic and curatorial practices as being temporary effects of processes of negotiation between subjects, contexts and their relations. How do the proposed new public and social spaces appropriate the territories designated online (and paper) formats of magazines for creative formats of display, criticism, participation, narration and positioning?
