Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann
Professor Kaufmann teaches and publishes on European art and architecture 1500–1800 in its global context, the theory and practice of world art history, and the geography and historiography of art. He continues to be interested especially in the connections of northern and central European art, and in drawings. At present he is advising graduate students writing dissertations on a wide variety of topics, including the Flemish artistic presence in 17th-century Madrid; art and art theory in 17th-century Sweden; 16th-century architecture and theory in Central Europe; battle paintings of New Spain (1650–1700); Franco-Flemish exchange in the French Renaissance; Flemish pulpits, 1650–1750; religious difference and artistic practice in Northwest Germany, 1580–1620; copies of Leonardo and their collectors 1475–1630; and Czech Baroque sculpture.
