Chichu Art Museum_Benesse Art Site_Naoshima_Tadao Ando

Conceived to be a very large site-specific artwork, this art museum belongs to the Benesse Art Site located in the island of Naoshima, Seto Inland Sea (Setouchi). The design is by Tadao Ando and opened in 2004. According to the official site, it was conceived to rethink the relationship between nature and people: “the museum was built mostly underground to avoid affecting the beautiful natural scenery of the Seto Inland sea. Artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are on permanent display.
