vrijdag 3 april om 19.00 u in Wiels (Brussel)

zaterdag 4 april om 14.30 u in Witte de With, Rotterdam.

Over Open 16

Naar aanleiding van de eerste Brusselse Biënnale organiseerde Pascal Gielen in samenwerking met het Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren, het Vlaams steunpunt voor beeldende, audiovisuele en Mediakunst BAM en het lectoraat Kunstpraktijk in de Samenleving van de Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, op 19 oktober 2008 in Brussel een lezingen- en debattenprogramma, waarin de kunstbiënnale als globaal fenomeen ter discussie stond.
De teksten van sprekers Chantal Mouffe, Michael Hardt, Boris Groys, Charles Esche en Maria Hlavajova, zijn nu gepubliceerd in Open, cahier over kunst en het publieke domein en aangevuld met teksten van Brian Holmes, Irit Rogoff, Simon Sheikh en Thierry de Duve. De samenstelling van de teksten gebeurde door Pascal Gielen en Jorinde Seijdel, hoofdredacteur van Open. Dit extra nummer van Open is tevens een jubileumnummer ter ere van het vijfjarig bestaan van het cahier in de huidige vorm.
Open, cahier over kunst en het publieke domein, is een initiatief van de Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte (SKOR) te Amsterdam en wordt uitgegeven door NAi-Uitgevers. Open is een anthologische serie waarin vanuit een cultureel perspectief de veranderende condities van het publieke domein worden onderzocht. Met het onderwerp van de biënnale wordt ingegaan op de wijze waarop dit fenomeen en haar legitimerende discoursen zich verhouden tot het denken over de stad en urbane politiek, tot nieuwe opvattingen van openbaarheid en tot de implicaties van processen als globalisering en mediatisering.
Open 16 werd gecoproduceerd door SKOR, deBuren, BAM, en Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Met dank aan de eerste Brusselse Biënnale.

About Open 16

On 19 October 2008, in connection with the first Brussels Biennial and in association with the Flemish-Dutch Huis deBuren, the Flemish foundation for visual, audio-visual and media art BAM and the Lectureship in Arts in Society of the Fontys College for the Arts, Pascal Gielen organised a programme of lectures and debates focussing on the art biennial as a global phenomenon.
The speeches by Chantal Mouffe, Michael Hardt, Boris Groys, Charles Esche and Maria Hlavajova are now being published in Open, cahier on art and the public domain, supplemented with essays by Brian Holmes, Irit Rogoff, Simon Sheikh and Thierry de Duve. The texts have been edited by Pascal Gielen and Jorinde Seijdel, editor-in-chief of Open. This extra issue of Open is also a jubilee issue to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the cahier in its present form.
Open, cahier on art and the public domain, is an initiative of the Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte (SKOR), Amsterdam, and is published by NAi-Publishers. Open is a series of anthologies in which the changing conditions of the public domain are examined from a cultural perspective. The subject of the biennial has lead to an examination of the way in which this phenomenon and its legitimising discourse relate to ideas about the city and urban politics, to new views about the public domain and to the implications of such processes as globalisation and mediatisation.
Open 16 was co-produced by SKOR, deBuren, BAM, and Fontys College Lectureship in Art in Society. With thanks to the first Brussels Biennial.
