Manifesta 12 Education Club
Organised by the M12 Education Department, Manifesta 12 Education Cluband its participants examine the grey zone between cultural mediation and social practice. In this grey zone, the two fields are barely distinguishable, overlapping, coexisting and using each other’s approaches.
It was in this grey zone that we found ourselves during the first days of research in Palermo. There we met most of our local collaborators and allies of the Education and Mediation Programme of the biennial. And it is this grey space which the Manifesta 12 Education Hub continues to investigate.
The temporary community of M12 Education Club breathes fresh air into existing discussions by fostering the circulation of new perspectives. The topics (issues) are revised by doubts and ongoing reflection, acceptance, and examination of failures – as well as non-verbal modes of communication and participation. This approach addresses recurring questions while avoiding generalisation, repetition, and fatigue.
Manifesta 12 Education Club takes place on 19 and 20 October at Teatro Garibaldi di Palermo. Speakers include: Hedwig Fijen (Director, Manifesta), Stefan Kalmár (Director, ICA, London), Carmelo Rodríguez (Enorme Studio, Madrid, for the Education Hub project, Education Department, Manifesta 12), Perrine Détrie (Yes We Camp, Marseille), Céline Rousseau (Le Gare Franche, Marseille), Nico Angiuli (visual researcher, filmmaker and performer, Bari), Valentina Mandalari (Coordinator of the project ‘Un Sacco di Palermo’, Education Department, Manifesta 12), Annamaria Cilento (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino), Annabelle Arnaud (FRAC, Marseille) and Gloria Vitaioli (Save The Children, Firenze, Italia).
The M12 Education Club have limited seats and include two levels of engagement: club members (upon application) and audience (upon registration). If you want to participate, please fill the form at the links below: Application for Members: manifesta12.org/education-club-members Registration for Audience: manifesta12.org/education-club-audience

Many of the Manifesta 12 Collateral Events and 5x5x5 projects keep running! Although they are not part of the main programme titled The Planetary Garden, the Manifesta 12 Collateral Events and 5x5x5 run in parallel to the biennial. Throughout Palermo and other communities in Sicily, amazing venues have generously opened their doors to host the Manifesta 12 Collateral Events. Locations from stupendous Baroque palaces to Norman architectural masterpieces and artisanal workshops, many of which have never received the public, can now be seen and experienced through the lens of local, national, and international cultural organisers. In September, other extraordinary projects by renowned artists, galleries and institutions have been presented in Palermo and beyond. From the project The Hidden City that brought to the stunning Palazzo Abatellis key speakers in the fields of art, design, botanics and architecture, to the artistic residency project XDANISINNI, presented by Xrivista; from PUSH presenting MICRO||COSMI and the new graffiti by BR1, to Magazzino Brancaccio's events and MoltiVolti Altrove with its ongoing ethnic cooking classes. From the urban vegetable garden by OrtoCapovolto to Elena Bellantoni's exhibition at Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva and Marginal's project Counter-colonial Aesthetics in via G. La Loggia 5. Manifesta 12 Palermo in the Press The Palermo Cultural Renaissance keeps drawing the attention of journalists from all over the world. More that 1 thousands articles have been published from the beginning of this year on Palermo and Manifesta 12, and many features have been transmitted on major national and international radio and TV channels such as Rai, Sky Arte HD, ORF.AT, ARD, ZKM, Radio Rai, Radio Techetè and Radio Montecarlo. This month, we have collected the enthusiastic reviews of The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence published in the major international and Italian media outlets such as: Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica - FOOD Supplement, D-La Repubblica, KESQ.com, E-Flux, INTERNI Magazine, L'Altraeconomia e Bell'Italia.Particularly, an insightful article on this month issue of ArtReview by Ben Eastham highlights that: "As Pangloss learns in Voltaire’sCandide(1759) –to which the exhibition’s subtitle alludes –that ‘human grandeur is very dangerous’, so Manifesta proposes that living ethically means adapting to local conditions, relinquishing a degree of control over the world of which we are part and recognising the virtues of pragmatism. Collovà’s installation includes a desk on which a sheet of paper offers a set of definitions of archaeology that might equally describe the impression left by the biennial: ‘WHAT REMAINS’; ‘WHAT RESISTS OR CAN RESIST’; ‘A PLACE FROM WHICH YOU CAN REALISTICALLY RESTART’. Also, we would like to recommend this insightful review on Manifesta 12 Palermo, published on AMMODO website: www.ammodo.org/ammodo-x-manifesta-12Read the selected online press coverage of Manifesta 12 at this link: www.manifesta12.org/coverage
