Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition

The 25th ICOM's General Conference took place during the week of 1–7 September 2019, in Kyoto, Japan, with the theme: "Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition". This triennial gathering attracted more then 4.000 participants (a record!) promising to inspire a range of discussions and exchanges on museum-related issues. But in the end, Kyoto will be remembered as the place where a new museum definition ended in a stalemate, although becoming a world-wide debate concerning not only the museum definition, but it's mission, visions and values in a historical moment when the world is in a turmoil. 

Museus como núcleos culturais: o futuro das tradições

A 25ª Conferência Geral do ICOM ocorreu durante a semana de 1 a 7 de setembro de 2019, em Kyoto, Japão, com o tema: "Museus como centros culturais: o futuro da tradição". Este encontro trienal atraiu mais de 4.000 participantes (um recorde!) Prometendo inspirar uma série de discussões e intercâmbios sobre questões relacionadas a museus. Mas no final, Kyoto será lembrado como o lugar onde uma nova definição de museu terminou em um impasse, embora tornando-se um debate mundial sobre não apenas a definição de museu, mas sua missão, visões e valores em um momento histórico em que o mundo está em tumulto.
