Rio de Janeiro hosted the 23rd ICOM's General Conference in August 2013. The Theme was: "Museums (memory + creativity) = social change" encouraging the presentation of countless ideas and experiences based on creativity that has valued cultural heritage, highlighting the transformative role of museums through social memory, a field in which Brazil claims to be a pioneer and promoter. ICOM's 31 international committees met in Rio de Janeiro, at Cidade das Artes, for a series of seminars that discussed the new directions of museology in the country and in the world.The Forum Permanente: art museums; between the public and the private realms was invited to produce a critical coverage of this General Conference, consisting of live broadcasting and critical reports (text), providing further storage of this material that is freely available here.
This event in São Paulo, just after the 23rd ICOM's General Conference in Rio de Janeiro, brought together, for the first time, ICOM's members of the Global South.
